DIY Chinese New Year Snake Red Packet Craft for Families

Chinese New Year is a time for family, tradition, and spreading blessings. One of my favorite traditions since relocating from the US to Singapore has been creating personalized red packets (hongbao) for gifting to family and friends. I started this tradition two years ago, engaging my children in decorating these red packets for their grandparents. Each year, the design changes to reflect the Chinese zodiac animal, making this a fun and meaningful craft that also introduces my kids to cultural symbolism.

This year marks the Year of the Snake, and our red packet design features a playful snake with a moving tongue element! Here’s how you can create your own customized snake red packet at home.

The Symbolism of Red Packet Gifting

Red packets are a cherished tradition in Chinese culture, symbolizing good luck, prosperity, and blessings. The vibrant red color represents happiness and warding off evil spirits. For children, the act of decorating and gifting these packets deepens their understanding of the cultural significance and helps them connect with their heritage.

Materials Needed

  • Red packet template (free to download from First Palette)
  • Printer and paper (preferably cardstock for sturdiness)
  • Markers, colored pencils, or paint
  • Scissors
  • Tape or glue
  • Craft knife (for precision cutting)

Tutorial: Creating the Snake Red Packet

  • Prepare the Red Packet TemplateDownload and print the red packet template from First Palette. Carefully cut out the template, fold along the lines, and tape or glue it to form the envelope. This will be the base of your red packet.

  • Design the SnakeDraw a snake design that fits the front of your red packet. You can make it as intricate or simple as you like. We opted for a playful snake with big, friendly eyes to make it kid-friendly and fun.

  • Create the Moving Tongue

  • Cut a small slit where the snake’s mouth will be.

  • Draw a tongue on a separate piece of paper. Shape the tongue with a pointed “V” at one end to mimic a snake’s forked tongue, and make the other end slightly larger than the slit so it can’t be pulled out completely.

  • Slide the tongue through the slit, ensuring it can retract, elongate, and move from side to side.

  • Attach the Snake to the Red PacketCarefully tape the snake design onto the front of the red packet. Be sure not to tape over the tongue so it remains movable.

  • Add Finishing Touches. Decorate the rest of the red packet with festive patterns, Chinese characters for blessings (福 for “Fortune” or 幸 for “Happiness”), or embellishments like gold stickers.

  • Done!Your customized snake red packet is now ready to spread blessings and joy!

Engaging Kids in the Process

This craft is an excellent way to involve your children in Chinese New Year preparations. My kids love drawing the animal of the year and adding their personal touches to the design. It’s a wonderful opportunity to bond as a family while teaching them about tradition and creativity.

Reflection

Gifting personalized red packets has become a heartwarming tradition for my family. It’s not just about the monetary gift but the thought, effort, and love poured into creating something unique for our loved ones. This year’s snake design has been a hit with the grandparents, and my kids are already brainstorming ideas for next year’s zodiac animal!

Try making these customized red packets with your family and share the joy of crafting and gifting this Chinese New Year. Wishing you and your loved ones a year full of happiness, prosperity, and creativity!
