Interactive Rainy Umbrella Craft for Toddlers

I saw brilliant Agnes @hellowonderful_co’s Halloween craft showing baby Dash in a spider costume under an umbrella with rain drop decoration and immediately wanted to try making this rainy umbrella craft since Gwen has an umbrella obsession.

When she spots umbrellas in her books she would sign “open” so that I would bring her an umbrella and open it up for her to sit under, yes at home 😂 I would also play Rihanna’s Umbrella song on Alexa to indulge her love for umbrellas 😂😂 Call me a crazy mum.

Anyway when I was prepping, a brainwave hit and I thought of a way to make the rain drops slide-able so they could roll down the umbrella like real rain drops!

So the adaptation I did on top of Agnes’ tutorial is to hot-glue short straws onto the felt rain drops, and then thread the string through the straws before attaching one end of the string to the top spoke and the other end to one of the end spokes. Simple as that! Now you have rain drops that can easily slide up and down the umbrella.

How The Play Went

I propped some cushions and soft toys under the umbrella to make an inviting space for Gwen. When she spotted the umbrella cosy corner, she immediately scooted under the umbrella and spent some time lying on and rolling over the cushions 😂

She also tried playing peekaboo with me from under the umbrella and that was when she noticed the rain drops. I demonstrated rain drops rolling down the umbrella and sang, “Rain, rain, go away” as well as “Itsy Bitsy Spider”.

Then I asked Gwen if I could join her under the umbrella since it was “raining” 😂 Sweet girl said, “ya” and was happy to have me crowd her cosy corner. The second time I asked, she said, “noooo” lol. Looks like someone became possessive over her nice little space 😂😂

With older children, I believe they can find more ways to include this craft in their imaginary play in settings like picnic, camping, by the beach etc.

Now won’t you like some rain at home? ☔️Credits again to the lovely Agnes of Hello Wonderful for sparking this creative idea!
