Supercharged Mompreneur Pei Li of 8Dec

Mumpreneurs are amazing multi-taskers. As though running a household and running after their toddling kids aren't enough, they run a thriving business too. Miraculove interviews 5 inspirational mumpreneurs to find out how these superwomen do it.

First in the spotlight is Pei Li, founder and creative stylist of 8Dec, recently recognised as top wedding stylist in Singapore by Tallypress.

Pei Li, tell me about yourself and your business!

I am a leftie, love crafting and all things beautiful. My middle name is perfection. I have a 15 months old daughter, who seems to be keen in lending me her (little) helping hand in crafting.

I run a event styling business, with focus on weddings. I have a small team that is dedicated to make every wedding or event an unforgettable one.

The first question that many clients would ask, why 8dec? It is not hard to guess, 8dec is my birth date! But it also means D.E.C: décor, events, celebrations and 8 represents the “infinity” logo – which is of significance for wedding.

What kind of mom are you?

Being a first-time mum, I think I am quite a protective and “gan-chiong” mum (laughs!). However, as my daughter grows, I have learnt the art of letting go and be more chill about things.

I love art and would love to nurture my daughter’s interest in this area. I try to schedule a painting session weekly and let her play with crayons and colour pencils. My husband and I love the outdoors, the nature and travelling. We have been bringing her on runs in our running pram to parks. Our daughter has travelled with us to 4 countries so far, including one to New Zealand where we brought her along for trekking, when she was 9 months old! I have been speaking and reading to her in Mandarin, to ensure that she doesn’t have difficulty in picking up this “tough” language.

We also strongly believe in giving her full support on what she likes to do in the future!

When was your business founded? How did the idea come about?

It all started when I planned and styled my own wedding back in 2014. I have interest all along in crafting and my wedding was the perfect opportunity for me to revisit this hobby/interest. As I was holding a full-time job back then, I only took up selective event styling jobs.

To further pursue this interested as well as to take care of my daughter, I decided to leave my full time job in last December to be a full-time mum and to focus on 8dec.

Tell us about your products. What are the unique selling points of your business?

We are able to create (almost!) everything that clients request for. From paperflowers to chalkboard backdrops, fairylights installation to Peranakan theme setup, anything to suit the theme of the wedding or event. Our works are painstakingly hand-crafted and we insist in thinking out of the box in order to create bespoke pieces that would befit the occasion.

What do you find most challenging about being a mom and juggling motherhood with running a business?

It is extremely challenging as my daughter is still very young and requires full attention from me. Plus, 8dec’s work is labour intensive with all the crafting involved. All the weddings are different, so I have to spend a lot of time from researching of ideas to bringing them to “life”.

8dec’s “office” hours usually begin after my daughter sleeps around 8-9pm and I work till late. During the day, I spent time planning my daughter’s meals and play time activities. This leaves me barely anytime for myself, coming from a person who loves having “me-time”, this is something I am still trying to adjust to.

What're your supercharged moments as a mompreneur?

Supercharged moments to me, is about dressing up, dolling up and feeling good about myself.

Being a stay-at-home-mom and running my own business, I rarely get the opportunity to dress up, much less having the time to put on makeup. So whenever I get to have some me time, catch up with friends or go on a date with my hubby, I will make an effort to look good.

Looking good makes me feel good, my definition of supercharged moment. On the other hand, I prefer light makeup and I think having good skin sets the "base". However, with my hectic schedule, I am always too tired to go through the 6-7 steps regime so I am constantly on a look out for an all-rounder skincare product!

What’s the worst thing that had happened so far in this journey?

I am glad that our “styling journey” so far has been great! The only thing is working under extremely tight schedule for the setup, especially elaborate ones that involved overhanging fairylights. Most of the venues allow 3-4 hours for the setup and we have to ensure that everything is completed within the time frame. Being a perfectionist doesn’t help at times, as I will continue to fine tune the setup till the last minute.

What do you want to achieve in the next 5 years?

Giving back to the society is one of the thing we hope to work towards to. There is nothing concrete at the moment but we already have some ideas in the making. Shall reveal more in time to come!

Another thing on the wishlist is to conduct more crafting classes to share our interest with everyone. Being a mum, I would love to get children involved in crafting. We are planning to organize kids friendly crafting classes in the upcoming holiday!

What would you say are some of your personal beliefs or philosophy?

Giving 101% to our clients. Wedding is once-in-a-life-time matter and we really want the couple to enjoy the wedding planning process, so we don’t only offer wedding styling advices but also try to help out in other wedding related matters, like sharing contacts of other vendors they might need.

Anything else that you would like to share?

No one has ever noticed this, but I always like to sneak in my favorite names into styled shoots! This explains why I love having name placement cards in the styled shoot I organized *winks”

Try catching some of these names.

Happy Mother's Day to all ladies who have given life and made the world better!

Hi! I am Yunnie. I am the newly minted mama to a little baby girl and a mum friend to everyone on this special (and many times scary) journey of motherhood. Also a graduated bride with a penchant for weddings.

Hi! We are Yunnie & Limin and we used to design customised wedding invitations in Singapore. If you’re here for that, thank you but we no longer design and are sorry that we can’t be a part of your special day. But we welcome you to hang around if you have little people in your life whom you interact and play with. Miraculove is now an education website for caregivers to be inspired by our heart and handmade play ideas, so everyone can make learning fun and stimulating for babies and toddlers.
