Not just taste-safe but yummy (and fibre-packed!) Jelly makes for a wonderful sensory play experience, it's soft, mushy, gooey and messy!

I like that jelly has transformative qualities so you can literally smash jelly up and turn it into a melty liquidy mess.

As a wow factor, I set my jelly in an empty watermelon rind bowl and pumpkin shell (a great post-halloween activity!)

The Setup

Materials:

  • Gelatin powder (I followed the instructions on the pack to make watermelon jelly mixture which I poured into the watermelon rind bowl and pumpkin shell)
  • Emptied watermelon rind bowl (I used a mini personal watermelon, it's a terrific size for toddlers! The watermelon flesh I scooped out went into the watermelon jelly!)
  • Empty pumpkin shell (Keep the top, it makes a nice lid!)
  • Spoons, scoops, toy knifes, containers for jelly play, transfer and filling

Steps:

  • Scoop out watermelon flesh and blend. Add water till you reach 4 cups worth
  • Add gelatin to 1 cup of watermelon juice
  • Bring the other 3 cups of watermelon juice to a boil and then pour over the 1 cup of juice with gelatin. Stir till well-mixed
  • Place in fridge for at least 3 hours (or overnight) to set the jelly
  • Let free play happen once you provide the tools!

Tips:

  • Place watermelon jelly and pumpkin jelly in small bowls or saucers so they can stand without toppling all over
  • Place the watermelon bowl upside down and show your child that the jelly withstands gravity! Older kids will be interested to understand why!

Benefits of Sensory Play

  • Exploratory learning at its best, learning and processing properties about new objects through their senses
  • Manipulating jelly with hands improves fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination
  • Builds decision-making (what can I do with the jelly and the tools?) and self-esteem since there is no right or wrong way to play with the materials and children can experiment freely
  • Fosters language development (Describe jelly's texture, appearance, taste and properties in varied words to help your child pick up new vocabulary!)
